√ a-ha’s new studio album, “True North”, to be released on October 21st
In the official full trailer, we hear a-ha’s Magne Furuholmen explain “’True North’ is a letter from our home to the world. It was kind of inspiring to see this as a performance within a film that would somehow have a narrative tied to what those songs were.”
Sony Music Entertainment Premium Content and Trafalgar Releasing on Thursday unveiled the official full trailer for a-ha’s upcoming film ‘True North’, the companion to their new studio album of the same title. “True North” will be released in select cinemas worldwide on Thursday, September 15, with the album to follow on Friday, October 21. This film will also feature a special behind-the-scenes featurette, exclusive to theaters. Watch the official full trailer here.
A press release noted: “The original idea for ‘True North’ was for the Norwegian trio, consisting of Morten Harket, Paul Waaktaar-Savoy and Magne Furuholmen, to record their first session at the wonderful studio location, just 90 kilometers above the Arctic Circle then. to film it. Eventually, the project expanded into more production, and they were joined by the talented Norwegian Arctic Philharmonic Orchestra. What emerged from these sessions is a great album, and film to match, detailing the band’s vision of a collective connection to the environment.”
“‘True North’ is a letter from a-ha, from the Arctic Circle, a poem from the far north of Norway,” Furuholmen said.

The press release continued: “In repeated vignettes, the multi-dimensional film ‘True North’ follows this narrative arc through actors portraying life in the north as well as documenting the band recording music over two days in Bodø, Norway. This is a unique release from a-ha that embodies the spirit of their new songs, with long-time a-ha collaborator Stian Andersen at the helm as director.”
He said, “It was an honorable assignment to direct the film ‘True North’. It was also a great pleasure to write and create the narrative to match the beautiful songs of a-ha in this film.”
Since their global breakthrough with “Take On Me” in 1985, a-ha have continued to adapt and evolve. Now, with their 11th studio album and the documentation of its making, a-ha have entered a new phase.
“First, we had the idea of recording a studio session live,” Waaktaar-Savoy said. “Then, to film a studio session. This developed further into a production with the Norwegian orchestra, the Arctic Philharmonic, with whom we have collaborated.”
The press release said, “True North is the band’s most revealing, most personal and moving. Never before has the spirit of a-ha been so exposed.”
“True North” is produced by Apparent in association with Sony Music Germany, Bodø2024 and Aker Horizons and distributed by Sony Music Entertainment’s Premium Content Division. The film is distributed theatrically worldwide by Trafalgar Releasing.
The film “True North” is released in selected cinemas worldwide on September 15 via the Trafalgar release. It will be shown locally at the North Park Theatre, 1428 Hertel Ave., Buffalo.
