If you’ve never had another passenger bother you during one of your flights, consider yourself lucky! Most travelers have encountered a passenger who annoyed them at some point during a flight. The more you fly, the more often you see (or smell) passengers who are clearly not the favorite character of the rest of the flight. In a recent survey, travelers were asked which behaviors of other passengers bothered them.
Below are the 10 most annoying passengers on flights, along with the percentage of respondents who found their behavior annoying.
1) Passengers kicking the seat
Percentage of respondents: 59.11%
Unsurprisingly, passengers found those who kicked the backs of their seats to be one of the most annoying things a passenger can do. As a direct physical assault on travelers’ personal space and comfort, it makes sense that it’s at the top of the list.
2) Drunk and unruly passengers
Percentage of respondents: 59.11%
Drunk and unruly passengers tied with seat kicks for 1St part, and it’s no surprise why. Once you’re thousands of feet in the air in a metal tube, there’s no way to get out of a situation. Unfortunately, some passengers can’t handle their alcohol, leading to extremely uncomfortable and even dangerous situations like the one below.

At best, you’ll have to put up with snoring from someone who’s had a few too many. At worst, threats of physical violence have occurred. This particular behavior can go from annoying to dangerous pretty quickly.
3) Bad-smelling passengers (or very Good)
Percentage of respondents: 48%
Almost half of respondents said that passengers who smell bad from poor hygiene or wear too much cologne bother them. Being stuck in a giant flying tube with hundreds of other people is bad enough. Add unpleasant smells and it becomes a completely different experience.
4) Passengers who are neglectful parents
Percentage of respondents: 46.81%
Parents who are not careful during flights follow passengers with bad smell. Almost half of the respondents said that parents who are not looking after their children disturb them on flights. Unfortunately, this behavior often coincides with the #1 most annoying thing – seat kicks.
5) Passengers eating strongly smelling food
Percentage of respondents: 39.8%
Similar to #3, passengers who eat strong-smelling foods may disturb the people around them. However, these odors are not as annoying as bad-smelling passengers.
6) Passengers who buckle the armrest
Percentage of respondents: 39.07%
Almost two out of five respondents found passengers holding the armrest to be annoying. You probably know what they mean if you’ve been stuck in the middle seat with two pigs for an armrest.
7) Passengers reclining the seat all the way
Percentage of respondents: 38.25%
Reclining the seat on an airplane has been a debate among travelers for years. However, about 38% of respondents agreed that this was annoying behavior.
8) Passengers who talk to you too much
Percentage of respondents: 29.87%
Getting stuck in a conversation is a nightmare for many travelers, but at least when you’re on land, the option to walk away is available. Thousands of feet in the air, there’s no escaping a talkative passenger. However, starting the flight with headphones can help you avoid engaging in unwanted conversation.
9) Passengers boarding or disembarking out of sequence
Percentage of respondents: 29.60%
Everyone has seen the eager passengers who jump out of their seats and run down the aisle just to wait for the plane doors to open. Maybe they’re afraid of missing a connecting flight, or maybe that’s just the way it is. Either way, nearly 3 in 10 respondents found it annoying.
10) Listening passengers have their headphones turned up too loud
Percentage of respondents: 28.96%
Airplanes are loud as they are and often drown out a lot of background noise. If someone’s music is so loud you can hear it, it’s probably too loud. This fell just behind passengers who skip boarding, with fewer than 3 in 10 saying loud music or movies bother them.
Several more annoying passengers that didn’t make the top 10 were passengers who take off their shoes, passengers who use the top too far in front of their seat, and passengers who overuse PDAs. One thing remains clear. Getting a few hundred people together in an enclosed space for a few hours can certainly bring out some behaviors that annoy fellow passengers.
