Happy Death Day was hailed as one of the freshest and funniest horror films we’ve had in years when it first came out in 2017. It was nicely summed up as “Groundhog Day meets Scream,” the time-loop horror-comedy follows sister Tree Gelbman (Jessica Rothe) as she’s stuck reliving her birthday over and over again until she can discover the identity of the babyface mask-wearing creep who keeps killing her .

Christopher Landon’s film was such a hit for Blumhouse Productions that a sequel quickly followed in the form of 2019 Happy Death Day 2U, which saw Tree trapped in the same time again, but this time in a parallel timeline, meaning she once again had no idea who the killer was. Although a second sequel was planned to complete the trilogy, HDD3 has yet to materialize due to the lackluster box office performance of the second film.

While Tree’s story is sadly incomplete, the two films released to date nonetheless give fans plenty to chew on, with the complex time travel mythology requiring multiple viewings to fully appreciate. Obviously, the big question we’re left with after watching any chronological tale is: how many days was the protagonist trapped? In case that Happy Death Daythis question becomes: how many times did tree die?

Wonder no more though as here is a complete guide to the many, Many deaths of Tree Gelbman in both films of the franchise.

So there you go. Although we don’t actually see Tree die 11 times in it HDDwhen she recaps her experience at HDD2U, clarifies that it was lost on so many occasions, so we have to take it as fact. Confusingly, before her final death in the first film, Tree states that she is about to die for the “sixteenth time”. In light of her line in the second movie, we can assume this was just a comment.

There is a similar discrepancy next. Tree is only depicted dying eight times, mostly by various methods of suicide so she can avoid being stabbed by Babyface. However, as she closes the loop, she thanks her friends for helping her over the past “two weeks.” This could mean that there were other deaths that we didn’t see.

As for Tree’s screen failures, however, the official number is 19. Eat your heart out, Laurie Strode.
