Bucknell men’s water polo travels to Erie for four games

LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell University men’s water polo team is set to travel to Erie, Pennsylvania this weekend for four games hosted by Mercyhurst. Live video and stats will be available.

  • Bucknell returns to action this weekend after a successful Bucknell Invitational in which the team went 3-1 overall. The Bison defeated Johns Hopkins, McKendree and Wagner, leaving its only contest at Fordham, 16u-ranked the team in the final NCAA poll.
  • The Bison were led by Aleska Stefanovic, who earned Bison Athlete of the Week honors after an impressive weekend. The Belgrade, Serbia native scored 12 goals in four games over the weekend, including a career-best performance of five in a win over Wagner to close out the tournament.
  • Stefanovic has managed at least three goals in all but two of Bucknell’s games this season and leads the team with 28 goals this season.
  • Along with Stefanovic, they are in double figures in goals this season I went to Vlasceanu (16) and Hasan Mogultai (12). Vlasceanu, after missing the opening weekend, has scored 16 goals in seven games, including a five-goal effort against Johns Hopkins to open the Invitational.
  • Bucknell will face the Bearcats for the second time in a week after the two teams battled to a one-goal game Sunday morning. Vlasceanu scored the eventual game-winning goal in that one with three minutes to go as Bucknell took the win in the first meeting between the two schools.
  • The Bison have been involved in four games decided by two goals or less, improving to a 2-2 record in those contests after knocking off McKendree and Wagner in two shutout games.
  • The Bison have scored over 100 goals this season, outscoring their opponents 106-92 so far. The Bison have gotten most of their scoring in the first quarter, scoring 32 times in the first eight minutes.
  • Bucknell will open the weekend against Salem, a team the Bison faced twice last season. Bucknell took both games last year and owns a 24-3 record in the all-time series between the two schools.
  • Bucknell had 15-10 and 18-11 wins over the Tigers last season. Matt Rickman and Doruk Ozar each scored three times against the Tigers to close out the Bucknell Invitational. Jack Bruce and Walker Butler also scored twice in Bucknell’s 18-11 win.
  • In the September 5, 2021 game, a 15–10 Bucknell victory, the Bison used a 7–1 second quarter to break open a close game. Mogultay scored four times in the win, while Shay Gillern also found the back of the cage in the win.
  • The Bison last faced Gannon on the final day of the 2021 season, defeating the Knights by a score of 9-7 in the consolation round on Sunday, Nov. 21. Gillearn was the leading scorer for the Bison in the win, scoring three times in total. Adrian Touzot also had a good day at the cage office, posting ten saves.
  • Bucknell last faced Mercyhurst at home on September 21, 2019, taking a comfortable 13-1 win. Bucknell led 11-0 in the fourth quarter before the Lakers scored. Senior Will Gildea scored his first career goal in the win for the Bison in that game.
  • After this weekend, the Bison will continue their road trip with a single game at George Washington at 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 1 before hosting Johns Hopkins and the Colonials on Saturday, October 8.
